Chilchuck Tims (チルチャック・ティムズ Chiruchakku Timuzu?)[6] is a Half-foot locksmith and member of Laios' party.
Appearance[]
Chilchuck is a Half-foot with light skin, short auburn hair, and dark brown eyes. He is half the size of a typical tall-man featuring larger sized ears; which is common for his race. He is said to be tall for a half-foot, and is slender due to careful weight management.
For his typical dungeon attire, he wears a brown padded vest and green neck warmer over a white long-sleeved shirt, leather finger-less gloves, black pants, and leather boots.
Personality[]
Despite his looks Chilchuck is the farthest through his lifespan of the group, being 29, with his age being the equivalent of a man in his 50's. As such, he is shown to be the most mature of the group and is often the voice of reason between the more eccentric party members. He is shrewd and practical, rarely taking jobs from adventurers unless he is paid in advance.[7] This behavior was learned from his experiences of being exploited as a Half-foot.[8] He is more open to eating monsters than Marcille is,[9] but like her, draws a hard line at demi-humans.[10]He generally goes along with whatever the party does, but can speak frankly when they do something that can get them killed.[citation needed]
His job as the party rogue puts him on edge, as failure to undo or avoid traps can lead his companions to immediate mortal danger.[11] When other party members ignore his warnings, he quickly becomes agitated.[citation needed]
He prefers to keep his private life separate from his work, so he doesn't tell his party a lot about himself. This is consistent with his belief that the most common reason for party splits is interpersonal issues.[12] He is also very guarded towards others due to his experiences with how easy relationships can go south, though he is still shown to be friendly and rely on them understanding the importance of harmony with in the group.
Abilities[]
Chilchuck utilizes his heightened senses to keep his party out of trouble. His skills allow him to allocate his two large ears to help his crew thrive amongst each other and help with the journeys they make. His field of expertise is in locating[13] and disarming traps[11] and picking locks,[14] but he also uses his sensitive hearing to detect the approach of enemies before his companions are able to.[15]
Chilchuck also acts as the party guide, planning their path, finding shortcuts[14] and remembering the different passages through the dungeon.[16] He is fairly adept at making maps of the ever-changing dungeon.[17]
In battle, Chilchuck is able to wield a bow and arrow[18] and can also throw knives[19] with fairly high accuracy in finding their target.[20][21] In spite of this, he does not consider himself useful in battle, regularly excluding himself when counting people able to fight.[22][23] This appears to be due to thinking himself a hindrance to the others,[24] both because his ranged weaponry does very minimal damage[23] and his small stature meaning he would always be running underfoot.[25]
Relationships[]
Laios Touden[]
"Be more aware that you're a leader."
Chilchuck views Laios as a dangerous and unreasonable character.[26] He does, however, somewhat reluctantly view him as the leader of the party.[27]
Chilchuck sees Laios' lack of social awareness as a particular point of weakness in his leadership, as he sees interpersonal issues as the most common reason for party splits.[28]
However, he recognizes Laios's talents and skills with navigating the dungeon as well as his good intentions and respects him. He will often go along with Laios's plans even if he doesn't fully agree with them. He considers him a friend and understands he is a good person though he doesn't hesitate to chastise or correct Laios when he makes a blunder.
Marcille Donato[]
"A young elf lady"
Chilchuck views Marcille as "the friend who cannot shut up"[27] and gets easily annoyed by her interest in his life, particularly the way she romanticizes his relationship with his wife and children.[29] In turn, he finds entertainment in messing with her, expecting her to get flustered and whine whenever he teases her. [30]
Despite their occasional friction, he does worry about her and rushes to her aid whenever necessary.[31] In spite of his teasing and snark, he believes the party is lucky to have her with them.[32]
Senshi[]
"A food fiend"
Chilchuck views Senshi as a skilled cook and capable adventurer. Chilchuck also expresses respect for Senshi, even admitting he envies how he looks and wishing he could gain as much respect from others as Senshi does.[33] Despite that he is often frustrated by Senshi's habit of treating him like a kid.
Falin Touden[]
"Miss enigma. not real comfortable around her."
Chilchuck views Falin as "the girl who cannot say no".[27]
Izutsumi[]
"She seems really young."
Namari[]
"Easy to get along with"
Chilchuck and Namari have a similar outlook on life. He sees her as the easiest one to talk to within Laios' party. The two are depicted as drinking buddies.[34]
Shuro[]
"Loosen up a bit."
History[]
Chilchuck was born in a small village in a basin northeast of the Island. He then moved to Kahka Brud with his family when he was 14 years old. For the last decade or so, he traveled around dungeons doing business: lock-picking, language interpreting, mediating, and item appraisals.[5]
Chilchuck got married at age 13 and had three daughters in the span of 3 years,[35] Meijack, Flertom and Puckpatti.[36] Due to Chilchuck's reluctance to be emotionally open with his wife, she left with their children and has not seen him for many years. Despite this, one of his daughters has sent him letters informing him of their lives.
Chilchuck was caught and killed by mimics multiple times when he was a novice adventurer. He once was so wary of mimics that he forgot to check an ordinary treasure chest for traps.[37] He had accompanied multiple parties before joining Laios' and saw many of them split due to interpersonal issues.[27] Dandan was the one to introduce Chilchuck to Laios as a locksmith for hire.
He also has a leadership position among the Half-foot population on the Island and often advises other Half-foot individuals to run contracts by the guild before they sign. He charges a mediation fee for this service.[38] Chilchuck created this guild to prevent the exploitation and undervaluation of Half-foots as disposable sacrifices. This was likely put in place after he narrowly escaped being used as succubus bait by his hunting party.[8]
In the past, while in Laios' party, he was caught in a fire/oil trap, which he believes is worse than dying instantly.[39]
Plot[]
Trivia[]
- Chilchuck is very fond of alcohol, especially ale but also wine.[40][41][42]
- His least favorite type of foods are sweet side dishes.[43]
- His first cause of death within a dungeon was blood loss due to a Mimic attack.[44]
- Chilchuck hates mimics due to a history of repeated deaths caused by them.[45]
- Chilchuck is able to speak a language aside from the common tongue.[47]
- Chilchuck has not seen his ex-wife or children for four years,[5][48] although he is in contact with one of his daughters, Flertom.[49]
- He was briefly seen wielding a bow.[18] However, he does not actually fight in most chapters afterward.
- When Laios's group returned to where they originally fought the Red Dragon, the bow was found among the belongings that was left there. Chilchuck began to use it again after retrieving it.[20]
- Originally, Chilchuck was depicted with gray streaks in his hair.[34]
- Chilchuck's father died of alcoholism.[50] This doesn’t deter Chilchuck from his drinking habit in the least, saying that dying doing things you like isn’t a bad way to go.[51]
- Chilchuck has been shown not being able to go to sleep due to hunger and mentions bitterly that he used to be fine with not eating for two days.[52]
- His profile in The Adventurer’s Bible confirms that he does rigorous weight management to stay light enough to not set off traps. Combined with his stated BMI of 18, Chilchuck seems to be underweight.[53]
- In terms of modern-day humans, Chilchuck is about fifty years old.[53] This can be seen when he turns into a Tall-man when affected by the spores of a changeling where he turns into a human who looks to be around fifty years old. Funnily enough, this would make him older than Senshi who would be 44 in terms of modern day humans.
- Chilchuck has a penchant for pretty blondes. [54]
- A recurring joke in the beginning was Senshi frequently seeing and treating Chilchuck as the youngest of the group going so far as to give him "the birds and the bees talk" (to a horrified Chilchuck), despite the fact that Chilchuck is technically the oldest.
- The neckband Chilchuck almost always wears was gifted to him by one of his daughters.
- Chilchuck’s black shirt during the story infamously has a collar with a buckle. Usually hidden with his neckband, you can see it both unbuckled and buckled in chaoter 73, as well as with a more prominent buckle in the Daydream Hour portrait page of Half-foots and chapter 27.
- In the Monster Tidbits for trolls, we see memories of Chilchuck interacting with his daughters when they were young, looking angry and strict and threatening trolls will kidnap them if they disobey their parents. Due to his stated opinions on the changeling myths during chapter 50, it is unlikely he would have used forms of corporal punishment while raising them.
- While his relationship with his four siblings is "almost strangers"[55], Chilchuck is renting out the house he shared with his wife after she left to an unspecified relative[56] and Chilchuck and his wife had a big wedding because they had many relatives and those bonds were important.[57] It is unclear how close Chilchuck and his family are, and how much they kept in contact after he left his hometown.
- Chilchuck is currently renting a house in Kahka Brud different from the house he lived in with his wife and kids. However, he often stays in the Half-foot Guild’s lodgings on the Island instead, inbetween expeditions or for work.[56]
