Cithis (シスヒス Shisuhisu?)[1] is a female elf. She is a member of the Canaries in Captain Mithrun's squad and appears to be second in command to him.[1]
Appearance[]
Cithis has long pale grey hair and dark skin, and has a series of light yellow marks on her forehead and nose.[2] Like many of the other Canaries, she has a notch cut into both her ears,[3] indicating she has been convicted of black magic usage.[4] She typically wears a black choker, a strapless dress with a sweetheart neckline and a corset-like item and skirt that look much like the collars that the other Canaries wear. She also wears some rings and bangles.[5]
Personality[]
Cithis has a smug and elegant demeanor about her despite being a prisoner. She speaks kindly as long as she is required to by her superiors, but it is clear she is being insincere in most cases.[citation needed] When she is allowed to speak freely, she is shown to have a very sharp tongue and does not hold back her opinions.[6] The only person she is shown being consistently kind and respectful to is Mithrun.[7]
She harbors a deep jealousy of elven nobles and those born into wealth.[7]
Abilities[]
Cithis' specialty is her illusory magic, which is shown to be extremely powerful, especially against non-magic users who don't know what her ability is doing to them.[7]
She can use her magic to hypnotize people and put them into an extremely suggestible state. She used this ability on her previous Canary captain to keep them under her control, to the point that she could go free whenever she wanted,[7] though it appears she now only uses her power for the sake of interrogating suspects.[8] She can also use her power to plant suggestions into her enemies' minds during combat, such as when she tells Marcille, "Your legs have turned to stone" in order to cripple her temporarily.[9]
It appears she is also able to use fire magic, since she offers to 'burn up' an enemy at one point.[10] She carries a wand adorned with bells that makes it look like a branch of lily of the valley flowers.[11]
Relationships[]
Mithrun[]
"Tentative respect"
Cithis was assigned by Flamela to take care of Mithrun when he had returned to Canary duty after being a dungeon lord. As Mithrun's desires had been almost totally devoured by a demon, Cithis' power of 'suggestion' seemed like the perfect thing to control him and ensure that he ate, slept and did his duties properly even when he did not desire to.[12] She is often seen at his side, helping to point him in the right direction when he wanders off track.[13]
She originally used her powers to try and humiliate Mithrun by making him eat off the floor or dress in cute clothing, but when he never reacted to her teasing, she grew bored and tried to have Mithrun hurt Pattadol for her amusement after the latter scolded her. This was the first time Mithrun refused her orders (on the grounds that it would have gotten him kicked out of the Canaries).[12] After this incident, Cithis became surprisingly obedient and respectful to Mithrun.
Pattadol[]
"Someday I'll kill you."
Cithis shows a clear dislike for Pattadol, presumably due to the fact that Pattadol is a sheltered girl born into a wealthy noble family,[4][14] which are the type of people Cithis hates,[7] though it could also be partly because Cithis doesn't like being scolded and lectured by someone younger than her.[citation needed] Cithis still follows Pattadol's orders during their foray into the dungeon,[8] but is nevertheless harboring the desire to kill her someday.[15]
Trivia[]
- Her convictions are using ancient magic, incitement of murder, document forgery and fraud. For these she was sentenced for life.[16]
- Her favorite food is shrimp.[7]
- Her least favorite foods are 'anything sloppily prepared'.[7]
- Her first cause of death within a dungeon was blood loss from being pierced by an Undine's bullet-like shot.[17]
