The corpse retrievers (死体回収屋 Shitai kaishū-ya?) are a group who retrieve bodies from the dungeon as a profession.
Members[]
There are at least six members, led by a half-dwarf.[1][2][3] One of their members is a mage, able to heal paralyzed people[4] and cast illusory spells[5] who is a half-gnome.[3]
Plot[]
Fourth Floor Arc[]
The corpse retrievers are first seen finding the paralyzed bodies of Kabru's party. The corpse retrievers' mage determines that they were defeated by some kind of insect, then heals them, then their leader charges Kabru's party 3500 gold for the revival. When Kabru asks the corpse retrievers about their lost jewelry, the mage confirms to his leader that they must have been wiped out by Treasure Insects, but their leader shushes him. He tells Kabru that they know nothing, having found the party's bodies lined up against the wall, meaning someone else had come by.
When Kabru's party start off after the thieves of their belongings, the leader of the corpse retrievers reminds him to pay up, which Kabru does. As they leave, the mage asks their leader why he didn't tell Kabru about the Treasure Insects, to which their leader responds that the "more corpses, the better".[6] The corpse retrievers follow Kabru's party to the fourth floor in the hopes of them catching up with the thieves and killing each other, thereby providing them with corpses to retrieve for money.[7]
Fifth Floor Arc[]
Finding the party alive (due to their resurrection by Mr. Tansu), the corpse retrievers resort to drastic measures by getting their mage to cast an illusion to make them all look like mermen. However, Kabru quickly sees through the illusion, swiftly knocking out two of them and capturing the mage, who stops the spell. The corpse retriever's leader then surrenders and asks Kabru to free the mage.
When Kabru confronts them on their coincidental meeting, the leader explains his plan of the party and thieves killing each other. Kabru threatens to report this to the Island's lord, but the leader offers him a deal to take the two unconscious corpse retrievers and bring them to the resurrection center for the reward. When Kabru raises the fact they are only unconscious, one of the members hands him a merman's trident, with the leader saying he will back up their claim that mermen killed them. Kabru verbally agrees to the deal, but kills the leader instead and quickly takes out the other members except the mage. The mage begs for his life, but Kabru is unforgiving of people like the corpse retrievers who live by stealing from others, and he kills the mage as well.
The corpse retrievers' bodies are then dumped in the water by Kabru's party.[7]
Falin Arc[]
At the beginning of King Laios' speech, they are revealed to have been resurrected and appeared in the crowd.[8]
