— Falin Touden[1]
|
Falin Touden (ファリン トーデン Farin Tōden?) is the younger sister of Laios. Her consumption by a Red Dragon prompts the Touden party's latest expedition into the dungeon to rescue her.[5]
Appearance[]
Falin is of the Tall-men race and has fair skin, amber eyes, and uneven, shoulder length ash blonde hair. She is shorter than Laios and Shuro, but taller than Marcille.
In her normal dungeon attire, she wears a white, long-sleeved shirt and white pants, underneath a dark blue robe. She also wears brown, knee-high boots and a beret.
As a Chimera, her upper body, now covered in feathers, was fused with the red dragon's lower body with two white-feathered wings. After being resurrected again, her feathers remained on both her upper body and newly reformed legs, resembling a Beast-man.
Personality[]
Falin is a very kind person who doesn't want to hurt others. She extends this kindness even to the restless dead, casting wards on her party to avoid encounters instead of dispelling the ghosts altogether. She explains dispelled ghosts reform eventually, so they would only go through needless suffering.[6]
She is caring, considerate, self-sacrificing, and reckless, among other qualities she possesses. If the lives of her loved ones are in danger, she would not hesitate to act or take the blow in their stead. This is seen from her first appearance where she sacrifices herself for her party,[5] but she also consistently exhibits this trait in multiple flashbacks throughout the story.
She, like her brother, has a fanatic interest in biology from a young age.[7] When Laios recounts the kind of monsters they ate during their journey, she was amazed instead of repulsed. This was not a secret to the party either; Marcille anticipated Falin's excited reaction to eating monsters, and Shuro fell in love with her upon seeing her enthralled - rather than disgusted - by a strangely-colored caterpillar on her hand.[8]
Abilities[]
Falin is a magic user who appears to specialize in gnome-system magic. Her field of expertise is that of reinforcement, recovery and exorcism.[9] She appeared to know in coordination magic, although she stated that she still hadn't gotten the certification for teleportation magic.[citation needed] She teleported the whole party to the surface when they were defeated by a red dragon.[10]
As most human, Falin learns Gnome Magic system, in contrast to Marcille's elf Magic system.
Ironically and being a gag among the fandom, Falin is physically very strong with blunt weapon (from a tree branch, to a full-fledged mace), her strength is boosted even further after she became a Chimaera, she is able to render a Cockatrice unconscious in just one hit. In the general fantasy genre, maces are usually weapon of choice among cleric healer archetype.
Relationships[]
Laios Touden[]
"Respect"
Her elder brother. The two grew up together in an unnamed village in the north and are very close. Since she was young, she's dreamed of traveling the world with Laios.[9] She often helped cover for Laios' social blunders by elaborating or glossing over them. They have a common interest in biology and quarreled over reading The Dungeon Gourmet Guide when they were children.[11]
One of the primary things she admires about him is his ability to do a fantastic impression of a dog.[7]
Marcille[]
"Friend"
Falin and Marcille have been really good friends since their days in the Magic Academy.[7] Marcille cares for Falin very much. She admires her saint-like demeanor and would do anything to rescue her. Falin in turn admires Marcille and holds her in very high regard, calling her incredible. Although Marcille can get exasperated with Falin's love of monsters, especially now that they are eating them, they are close all the same.
Chilchuck[]
"He has an artisan's temperament."
Shuro[]
"He's serious."
Shuro is in love with Falin.[12] Shuro has even proposed to her instead of asking for permission to court her. Though she doesn't have any romantic feelings towards Shuro, she didn't expect to receive another proposal and thought it might be alright to accept. Simultaneously, she worried this would be dishonest to his feelings.[13]
Namari[]
"Knows a lot"
Falin's Parents[]
Falin believes her father (the village chief) to be clumsy with his words and that her mother worries a lot. She hopes for her family to reconcile someday despite their differences.[13]
Trivia[]
- Her favorite foods are fruit and cream.
- She does not dislike any food in particular.
- Her first cause of death within a dungeon was blood loss due to a Living Armor attack.[14]
- Falin had been nearsighted since she was a child, which caused her to develop a habit of squinting at things in order to see them. Her transformation into a chimera has improved her eyesight, and that habit has since corrected itself.[13]
- Though she isn't careful with it, Falin's skin is fair and beautiful. Possibly as a result, her cheeks flush easily. Marcille frequently calls her cute and she has a complex about it.[13]
- According to the man at the resurrection center, Falin is around 20.[15]
- She once had a fiancé, though they had never met. Their engagement was broken off once she was sent to the Magic Academy.[13]
- The names of the dogs she and Laios have owned are: Anowtrid (アノートリド Anōtorido?), Fucci (フッチ Fucchi?), Nussa, Muimui, Dustrag and Boff.[17] Anowtrid and Nussa were the pets their father owned and named.[18]
- The dogs never treated her with respect. The dog's hierarchy descended from her father as the dominant owner, then Laios, Fucci, Anowtrid, and Falin last.
- Her dragon chimera form was nicknamed "Faligon" by Senshi.[19]
- In Laios and Falin's village, they often had to deal with nomads who lived in the mountains near their home. They describe these nomads as savage and unreasonable, and the village would have to kill them if they got too close to the village.[citation needed]
- Prior to dropping out of the Magic Academy to become an adventurer, Falin was meant to be a church gravekeeper after she graduated.[20]
- Falin commented that her responsibilities would have been "the same things all gravekeepers do": maintenance, caretaking, purifying corpses and appraising their possessions, ensuring that there are no lingering spells on a corpse, and checking for any lingering attachments that may prevent the soul from moving on.[20]
- Upon Marcille's insistence that the job would have been stable and respected, Laios comments on how the gravekeeper in their hometown was scorned.[20]
