Familiars (使い魔 Tsukaima?) are a type of magical creature in Delicious in Dungeon.
Anatomy and Appearance[]
Familiars come in all shapes and sizes, as they can be summoned by three different methods.[1]
Those that are summoned by taking control of an existing monster will have the anatomical structure and appearance of said monster.[1]
Familiars formed by turning different plants and animals into monsters will retain characteristics of the original creature. For example, basilisks and cockatrices can be made by combining a snake and a chicken,[1] and look like a chicken with a snake tail. They also possess the heat-sensing pit organ that snakes have.[2]
Familiars made from scratch are the most varied and flexible in design, as their appearance and physical capabilities are completely up to their creator. For example, designing the creature to have a more streamlined body will allow it to move faster. (They also appear to be somewhat moldable after formation.)[3] Their anatomy appears similar in structure to real creatures but made from the components used to create them (e.g. vegetables acting as 'internal organs').[4]
Behavior and Weaknesses[]
Familiars have a wide range of abilities due to the various methods that can be used to make them. For familiars that are made from scratch, their behavior and abilities are entirely dependent on the person who made and controls them,[5] whereas those summoned by taking control of an existing monster will have the behavior and abilities of said monster (for example, the undine Marillier owned by the gnome Holm[6] exhibited similar abilities[7] to the undine that attacked the elf Marcille).[8]
Culinary Usage[]
Familiars are presumably edible if their base monster/components were edible.
Marcille's sky fish familiar, prepared from their week's worth of rations, was used to make Sky Fish and Chips.[4]
Other[]
Certification is required before being able to handle the dangerous spells necessary to make familiars.[9] People who have been seen with familiars are:
- Marcille - made familiar from scratch[10] that ended up being a 'sky fish'[11]
- Fleki - commands a number of different bird-like familiars, including a shadowy black bird with a curly tail,[12] three small round white birds,[13] and three larger white crow-like birds.[14]
- Holm - has an earth elemental[15] called Essiet[16] and had an undine called Marillier.[6]
- Misyl - commands bird-like familiars.[17][18]
