Familiars are a type of magical creature in the manga Delicious in Dungeon.

Anatomy and Appearance

Familiars come in all shapes and sizes, as they can be summoned by a number of different methods.[1]

The first is to take control of an existing spirits or monsters. The terms for doing so, however, are complicated, and if in a dungeon, the dungeon lord will almost certainly notice.[1]

The second method is to turn existing plants or animals into monsters. The resulting monster will look similar to its original plant or animal components - for example, basilisks or cockatrices can be made from snakes and chickens. This method, however, requires a significant amount of time and preparation.[1]

The third method is to make the familiar from scratch. While this method may seem the most difficult, it is good for making creatures that just need to move. It is not, however, ideal for making independent creatures. Making familiars by this method is not particularly efficient either, as it requires a large source of caloric energy (for simple familiars, up to a week's worth of rations),[2] preferably meat.[1] Hair can be used in it as a magical conduit.[3] The appearance and physical capabilities of a familiar prepared in this manner is completely up to the creator. For example, designing the creature to have a more streamlined body will allow it to move faster.[4]. Their anatomy appears similar in structure to real creatures but made from their original components (e.g. vegetables acting as 'internal organs').[5] When controlling a dependent familiar, their vision is shared with the person controlling it.[6] The controller may also find it difficult to move their own body at the same time as the familiar.[7]

Behavior and Weaknesses

For familiars that are made from scratch, their behavior and abilities are dependent on the person who made and controls it.[8]

Culinary Usage

Marcille's sky fish familiar, prepared from their week's worth of rations,[5] was used to make:

Other

Certification is required before being able to handle the dangerous spells necessary to make familiars.[10] People who have been seen with familiars are:

  • Marcille - made familiar from scratch[11] that ended up being a 'sky fish'[12]
  • Fleki - commands a number of different bird-like familiars, including a shadowy black bird with a curly tail,[13] three small round white birds,[14] and three larger white crow-like birds.[15]
