Cockatrices (コカトリス Kokatorisu?) are a type of monster in the manga Delicious in Dungeon.

Anatomy and Appearance[]

Cockatrices have the appearance of a rooster with a snake for a tail, much like basilisks,[1][2] but are approximately double the size.[3] Their wings are tri-colored in layers from light to dark[1] and appear to have three talons at the wingtip.[4] The snake part has a crossband-type pattern.[2]

The snake side has venomous fangs. Their venom causes petrification.[2]

Their eggs, like a basilisk's, look like snake eggs, but are significantly larger than Basilisk eggs (about the size of a dwarf's arm).[5]

Behavior and Weaknesses[]

Cockatrice are ruthless hunters.[1] Like Basilisks, Cockatrices can sense heat from their snake side with what is commonly known as a pit organ. The chicken side likely relies on sight.[4]

They appear to make nests like chickens.[1]

They should be attacked in a similar way to basilisks,[4] by first intimidating them by looking as large as possible[6] then confusing the brains of both halves of the animal through attacking from both sides.[7]

If bitten by a cockatrice, the victim should sit down with knees and arms tucked in, covering their ears with their hands and with their mouth closed. This puts them in a position that is safe and stable even when petrified, with minimal potential for parts of the body to snap off.[8][9] Natural recovery from petrification is possible but can take a long time, with Tall-men recovering anywhere from half a year to a decade afterwards; however those with high magical resistance such as elves will recover faster. A quicker cure can be performed via medicinal herbs or casting a spell.[10]

Culinary Usage[]

Cockatrice meat is edible.[11] It may be slightly more bitter than Basilisk meat, but the difference seems to be negligible. Unlike what is said in the Dungeon Gourmet Guide, it does not appear to taste like stone.[12] Their eggs are also edible.[13]

Cockatrice meat and eggs have been used in the following dishes:
