Kabru (カブルー Kaburū?) is the leader of an adventuring party that wishes to take down the Mad Mage.
Appearance[]
Kabru is a tall-man with dark skin, black hair, and blue eyes.
In his regular dungeon attire, he wears a chain mail shirt underneath pieces of plate mail and leather armor along with white pants and boots. After he dies a second time, he removes most of his armor, keeping only the leather protector on top of a black turtleneck shirt. On the surface, usually he wears a white shirt with black pants.
Personality[]
Kabru is a driven and analytical young man with a strong sense of justice. He shows great curiosity towards other people, usually adopting a humble and disarming persona around them to deduce their outstanding traits and their motivations, keeping tabs on them and being able to recall everything about them with astounding detail.[3] Around his party members, he's generally more playful and supportive of them.
Despite his friendly demeanor, he is deeply cynical and is particularly unforgiving of people he believes is responsible for corruption in the island, such as corpse retrievers who kill adventurers for a profit and the governor. He distrusts people who have political power to use it responsibly.[4][5]
His main reason for exploring the dungeon and conquering it is to prevent the dungeon from overflowing with monsters due to this happening to his hometown, which led to it being all but wiped of off the map in a massacre.
Part of his concern over the social and ethical corruption of dungeon business is that someone with bad intentions will get the power of the dungeon or that the island will get reputation for being stripped of everything valuable or to risky since they could be stabbed in the back at any moment. This would cause people to stop exploring the dungeon, and thereby not defeat monsters causing the dungeon to overflow.
Although he has great deduction and insight skills, he lacks much experience regarding dungeons and the monsters inhabiting the island, something that has resulted in his party and himself being killed several times.
Abilities[]
Kabru is quite the skilled individual due to Milsiril's teachings from when he was a child.[6][7] He's proficient at building acquaintanceships and is familiar with the majority of members of different adventuring parties.
His greatest skill is his masterful social skills; his as masterful at reading people and understanding social situations as Laios is at understanding monsters. Apart from quickly realizing that Laios and his party were not a malicious party that had frequently stolen from his team, he was able to deduce that the reason the Laios's team had changed and the reason for odd aggressive movements through the dungeon were because they were trying to rescue Falin (though he only deduced that it was only one of the two siblings not which one specifically) based on few glances of their despite never meeting or interacting with them apart from a few cursory glances at a local pub between adventures.
He's able to butter up to people with a friendly smile, which is frequently effective with women. His party member, Holm, even regards him as a "man who will do anything to get on someone's good side." Kabru has excellent observation skills, an impeccable memory, and is skilled at psychologically manipulating people. He was quickly able to calm down an enraged Shuro and get him to see the logic in Laios's amoral actions in resurrecting Falin.[8]
Kabru has extremely formidable fighting skills. He is able to strike a human opponent's vital spots with ease and is even skilled with a variety of weapons, swords, daggers, and even spears.[6]
He unfortunately lacks experiences or knowledge about monsters and the dungeon which leads to him and his party frequently getting wiped out.[9]
Kabru can be somewhat irresponsible when it comes to housework. His landlord, the bartender of the pub above Kabru's room, cleans his room free of charge.[10]
Relationships[]
Rin[]
"Like a big sister"
A mage in his party. Rin is in love with Kabru, and gets jealous when he looks at other girls, but Kabru doesn't have romantic feelings for her, rather, she reminds him at least somewhat of a sibling.[11] Regardless, she trusts his ability to lead the party.
Holm[]
"Knows a lot about spirits"
A healer/summoner in his party. Like other party members, he trusts Kabru's judgement but is aware of his two-faced nature. Kabru meanwhile respects Holm greatly for his knowledge about spirits.[11]
Daya[]
"A lady"
Mickbell[]
"Relax a little."
Kabru and Mickbell get along quite well, though Kabru thinks that he should learn to relax a bit.[11] He thinks that Mickbell shouldn't be so controlling of Kuro (out of fear that Kuro might leave him some day), and rather just be honest with him.
Mickbell also gets angry and panicked when Kabru speaks with Kuro in the native Kobold language, presuming that Kabru is filling Kuro's head with "weird ideas".[12]
Kuro[]
"Kobold"
Kabru was raised in a village that had a kobold settlement not far from it, as a result he understands more about kobold culture than the other characters,[13], and can speak a bit of the kobolds native language as well, which he sometimes uses to talk with Kuro about things that Kuro cannot articulate in common.[14]
Kabru also seems to be helping Kuro learn common properly by having study sessions with him (though they have to wait until Mickbell falls asleep so that he doesn't find out about it), and grows to understand how much both Kuro and Mickbell care about each other even if they aren't on the same page about it. He hopes the two can become proper friends once they both speak the same language.[12]
Milsiril[]
"Overprotective foster mother"
Milsiril is more or less Kabru's adoptive mother after the events at Utaya left him an orphan with nowhere to go. She is seen doting on him and spoiling him to an extreme degree, something that Kabru eventually grew uncomfortable with.[15][16] Milsiril also ended up comforting Kabru when he revealed that his biological mother was ostracized because of his 'unnatural' blue eyes, with the people of Utaya thinking of him as the spawn of a succubus demon, Milsiril was shown later giving Kabru all sorts of biological information as to why his eyes might be that color and telling him that he's by no means a monster.[17]
Kabru feels incredibly indebted to Milsiril for raising him even if she was overbearing, however he has come to a personal understanding after growing up in that environment that 'elves will never be able to truly understand short lived races.'[18] Some of Kabru thoughts on longer lived races not understanding shorter lived ones may be due to experiences with other elves juxtaposed to his relationship Milsiril. While Otta claimed that Milsiril treats the kids she adopts as pets rather than her children that does not appear to be true based on Kabru’s description of her raising him. Kabru describes her more as a sometimes overprotective but loving adoptive parent who means well but can be suffocating without meaning too rather then having treated him as a pet. She educated him on any topic he was curious on throughly with no indication that she ever thought of him as being incapable of learning complex topics. This though education Milsiril gave him growing up juxtaposed to how most long lived races refuse to take the time and explain the dangers of magic that causes dungeon to shorter lived races, which if had been properly explained may have prevented the tragedy in his village, may be why Kabru is angry with longer lived races that withhold information from shorter lived races to “protect them” by keeping them in the dark.
Laios[]
"He's the closest to conquering the dungeon."
Kabru was originally deeply suspicious and distrustful of Laios, all of the strange rumors about him and his party led Kabru to believe that he was a bad person.[19] After meeting him properly and finding out about his obsession with monsters however, he comes to the realization that Laios is more so just an extremely eccentric person. Kabru became convinced that Laios was the only person on the island with the skills, knowledge and determination to defeat the dungeon master[20], and decided to support him however he could.[21] Though after finding out about the true nature of dungeons and that Laios may be in danger of being tricked by a demon, he desperately wants to stop and protect him from doing anything that will get himself or his party killed.[22]
He has also recently admitted to Laios that, while he absolutely hates monsters, he wanted to become Laios' friend in order to at least try and understand where his love for them comes from.[23]
Mithrun[]
"I'm taking care of him"
Kabru has grown closer to Mithrun ever since Kabru dragged him down into a pit to stop him from killing the dungeon master. When Kabru first saw Mithrun, he was curious why Mithrun had let him live. After making contact with Pattadol, Kabru was tasked by the Canaries to tend to Mithruns needs until they were rescued.
When they made it to the 6th floor, (blizzard area) Mithrun suddenly collapsed due to draining his magic. Kabru asked Mithrun what was wrong with his body as he needed to tend to his needs properly, and this is at which point Kabru found out about the truth of the dungeons being prisons for demons, as well as how Mithrun was formerly a dungeon master himself, who now has no desires left after being 'devoured' by said demon.
Kabru has shown a lot of interest (and pity) in Mithrun's tragic history, seemingly wanting to condense his story down to its basic elements in order to tell Laios about it as a warning.[24]
He serves as Mithrun's new caretaker now that he is being held prisoner by the Canary squad, and is, in Fleki's opinion, quite good at taking care of him.
Trivia[]
- His favorite food is tomatoes.
- His least favorite foods are anything made from monsters, as well as elven style cakes.
- His first cause of death in a dungeon was succumbing to the poison of a basilisk.[11]
- Eating monsters is somewhat traumatizing for him as it reminds him of the Utaya massacre when monsters overflowed from dungeon and destroyed his friends family and home.[25]
- Kabru's first meal that he's ever cooked was Grilled Walking Mushroom.[26]
- Kabru is confirmed to know some rudimentary magic spells, such as water walk and illuminate, as well as basic healing. He also wanted to learn illusory spells, but found them too tiring/difficult.[18]
- Kabru got skinnier after his first appearance due to the affects of resurrection.[27]
- He is notably a foil to Laios; He has exemplary people skills, and is exceptionally talented at taking them out. He is also as interested in people as Laios is about monsters. However he is absolutely dismal when it comes to monsters and surviving the dungeon with Laios coming across him and his parties' corpses numerous times. Comparatively, Laios is woefully incompetent at dealing with people but a master at defeating monsters and navigating the dungeon safely.
- Kabru has visited the home of Holm's older sister to have tea and the two sometimes exchange letters.[28]
