Kensuke (ケン助?)[1] is a Living Armor mollusk monster inhabiting the handle of the sword Laios is currently wielding. Laios discovered it after fighting a group of Living Armor and decided to keep it without informing his party members but they eventually found out.[2]

Appearance[]

The only visible parts of Kensuke appear to be beady eyes on eyestalks, which poke out of the hilt of the sword it inhabits.[2] It also appears to be able to extend multiple tendrils when needed.[3] Falin identifies him as a pulmonata, a group of molluscs which includes the land snails and slugs and many freshwater snails. However, there is a species of abalone that have eyes similar to Kensuke, albeit the eyestalks are not as long.[4]

Personality[]

Kensuke has a cowardly personality, expressed by trembling whenever detecting monsters nearby. Though this behaviour has been beneficial when it came to Laios being able to be alerted when monsters were nearby, his cowardice has also been expressed by Kensuke launching himself out of the way of danger. An example is when Laios was about to execute the finishing blow to the Red Dragon, but Kensuke jumped out of his hands to escape for its own safety, temporarily leaving Laios without a weapon.[5]

Abilities[]

Kensuke appears to be able to sense monsters. On several occasions, it became agitated when aware of a monster nearby, with its trembling resulting in a rattling sound, warning Laios of the danger.[6][7] In addition, it seems to act as an agent of the Winged Lion, with the hilt of the sword changing to include a lion's head along with the already winged cross guard.[8]

He seems to be able to extend multiple tendrils,[3] which allowed it to unlock the door to the depths of the dungeon.[9]

Plot[]

Kensuke was initially a part of the largest colony of a group of Living Armour that was protecting their egg sac.[10] He joined Laios' adventuring party after his colony was defeated[11] and consumed by the party,[12] when Laios picked him as his new sword.[13]

Trivia[]

  • The name Kensuke (ケン助) in Japanese is a pun as ken can mean 'sword', while the kanji used for suke can mean 'helper', while Kensuke itself is a common male Japanese name. Suke is also a common ending to male Japanese names which could mean that Kensuke could also be interpreted as meaning "sword boy".
  • Senshi doesn't like Kensuke because Senshi looks at Kensuke as another monster.[citation needed]
  • Kensuke seems to be based on the Weapon of Warning, a magic weapon in Dungeons and Dragons that warns its user of danger.[14] This is shown in how Kensuke trembles when a monster is nearby, alerting Laios of danger with the resulting rattling sound.
  • When Kensuke first alerts Laios when the party encounters the Treasure Insects, he seems to interpret Kensuke's trembling as him saying "draw me".
