Krakens (クラーケン, Kurāken^?) are a type of monster in Delicious in Dungeon.

Appearance and Anatomy

Krakens resemble squids in anatomy and appearance, but are significantly larger in size. Some are even rumored to have reached the size of small islands.

They sometimes have Giant Parasites living inside them.

Behavior and Weaknesses

Krakens are implied to be the apex predators of the fourth floor, and will attack and eat adventurers and other medium-sized monsters such as Mermen.

Krakens possess thick skin that is difficult to cut through. In addition, their bodies are also heavily protected by a cartilage layer beneath the skin, making them relatively impervious to both physical and magical attacks. However, the area between the eyes is vulnerable, so a kraken can easily be dispatched by a well-aimed strike or spell there.

Krakens also have capsules that will shoot out a spermatophore if shocked (much like octopi and squids) which can easily stab into one's body, causing extreme pain.

Culinary Usage

Krakens can be prepared in a manner similar to their smaller cousins, and most likely have a wide range of usage in the culinary world.

Their tentacles can taste bitter, however. This is likely due to the presence of an ammonium chloride solution found throughout their bodies, which giant squid and some other large squid species use to maintain neutral buoyancy in seawater due to it being lighter than sea water.

Trivia

• The legend of the Kraken is generally thought to be based on exaggerated sightings of giant squid or colossal squid, which can grow to 12–15 meters (40–50 feet) in length and were not scientifically recorded until the turn of the 20th century.
