Anatomy and Appearance[edit | edit source]
Mandrakes typically resemble a man made out of roots. They start off looking like a bulb that then grows roots, sprouts, 'eyes' and a 'mouth'. The roots then grow small bulbs at the ends with the 'head' portion also growing roots.
Behavior and Weaknesses[edit | edit source]
When pulled out of the ground, mandrakes let out a scream that causes anyone that hears it to have a mental breakdown and possibly die. However, experienced foragers can easily kill one by cutting its head before it has the chance to scream. Another method, which is said to make the mandrake taste better, is to fasten a rope to a mandrake and then get an animal to pull it out, but this will unfortunately result in the animal's death.
Culinary Usage[edit | edit source]
Mandrakes are edible, and can be used in a variety of recipes. Their heads are the most nutritious and supposedly delicious part. They contain 1000 lemons' worth of mana. The mana herbs used in the Roast Basilisk dish are actually just mandrakes grown using water spirits as nutrients.
They have been used in the following dishes:
- Roast Basilisk (as mana herbs)
- Mandrake and Basilisk Omelet
- Mandrake Kakiage & Giant Bat Tempura
- Jack-o'-Lantern Potage and Sauteed Dryad Buds with Cheese
- Stone-Baked Cockatrice and Egg Ankake
- Memories of the Fifth Floor Pilaf
- Ice Golem Savory Egg Custard and Cooked Fish (from in the Golem)
- Hamburg Steak with Changeling Sauce
- Crispy Mushroom and Egg Sandwich
Other[edit | edit source]
There is an annual fair dedicated to them, where a competition is held to see who can grow the most human-like mandrake. The most symmetrical one with 'eyes' that are level, limb-like roots in the right places and good color will win
Trivia[edit | edit source]
- Mandrakes (Mandragora) are real plants but are poisonous so should not be eaten.
