Mandrakes (マンドレイク Mandoreiku?) are a type of plant monster in Delicious in Dungeon.
Anatomy and Appearance[]
Mandrakes typically resemble a man made out of roots.[1] They start off looking like a bulb that then grows roots, sprouts, 'eyes' and a 'mouth'. The roots then grow small bulbs at the ends with the 'head' portion also growing roots.[2]

Behavior and Weaknesses[]
When pulled out of the ground, mandrakes let out a scream that causes anyone that hears it to have a mental breakdown and possibly die.[3] However, experienced foragers can easily kill one by cutting its head before it has the chance to scream.[4] Another method, which is said to make the mandrake taste better,[5] is to fasten a rope to a mandrake and then get an animal to pull it out, but this will unfortunately result in the animal's death.[6][7]
Culinary Usage[]
Mandrakes are edible, and can be used in a variety of recipes. Their heads are the most nutritious and supposedly delicious part.[8] They contain 1000 lemons' worth of mana.[9] The mana herbs used in the Roast Basilisk dish are actually just mandrakes grown using water spirits as nutrients.[10]
They have been used in the following dishes:
Trivia[]
- There is an annual fair dedicated to them, where a competition is held to see who can grow the most human-like mandrake. The most symmetrical one with 'eyes' that are level, limb-like roots in the right places and good colour will win.[2]
- Mandrakes in real life used to have the same legend that it screams. The solution to pulling it out from Marcille’s book is the same as the real life strategy.
- In real life, mandrakes (Mandragora) are highly poisonous plants that should therefore not be eaten. However, due to mandrakes being used in omelettes and kakiage, it is possible that a real world substitute could be either parsnips or burdock root.[11][12]
