Mermen (魚人 Gyojin?), or Fishmen, are a type of monster in Delicious in Dungeon. They are often compared to and conflated with Mermaids.
Anatomy and Appearance[]
Mermen resemble giant fish with arm-like appendages. They are classed as the piscine type of merfolk and bear a resemblance to Mermaids, but with a fish head, gills and no nipples or navel.[1]
They grow aquatic plants on their heads as camouflage, which are secured to their heads via the plants' roots.[2] They also attach their eggs on these plants to protect them.[3]
When they hatch, they look somewhat like guppies or tadpoles and are about a centimeter in length. After seven days, they resemble small fish about two centimeters long with more arm-like pectoral fins. After about half a year, they are significantly larger with more well-defined 'arms'. Very few survive to adulthood as they have many predators, including the other type of merfolk, Mermaids.[4]
Behavior and Weaknesses[]
Mermen tend to move in packs. They are smart enough to use weapons (often tridents)[5] but can be dispatched reasonably easily by skilled adventurers.[6]
They prey on Bladefish and are subsequently preyed on by Krakens.[5]
Culinary Usage[]
Using Mermen in cooking is contentious due to their demi-human status (though Mermaids care little for the distinction, and will happily dine on juveniles).[1] The plants from mermen's heads are edible,[2] although care must be taken to remove any Mermen eggs stuck to them if that is a point of moral contention for the individual.[3]
The plants from Mermen heads (and secretly the eggs of Mermen) have been used in the following recipes:
