Mithrun (ミスルン Misurun?), referred to most often by his title Captain Mithrun (ミスルン隊長 Misurun-taichō?), is the captain of the Canaries sent to deal with the dungeon on the Island.

Appearance[]

Mithrun has pale hair cut in a short bob.[5] The tips of both his ears have been cut off.[5][6][2] He has black eyes,[2] which were originally silver.[3] His right eye was destroyed, and replaced with a prosthetic.[7] He typically wears a long-sleeved shirt, a sleeveless tunic, a skirt, trousers and thigh high boots. Like a number of the other Canaries, he wears a high neck collar.[8]

Personality[]

He has a very poor sense of direction.[6] He is calm and collected at all times, and is unaware of his own needs because the demon he made a pact with during his time as a Dungeon Lord devoured all of his desire except for his desire for revenge. He is very blunt when speaking.

Before becoming a dungeon lord he was, on the surface, an affable, friendly individual who many saw as an exemplary example of what an elf should be. In reality, this was a facade and he was a vain individual who looked down on those around him, especially his brother. This was because despite the assumption that the perfectly long eared Mithrun with pristine silver eyes (highly desirable traits among elves) was the legitimate heir of his prestigious and influence house, it was in fact his frail, average looking brother who often required a crutch to walk that was the legitimate heir. Mithrun's eyes and ears were actually a sign that he was the result of a scandalous affair.[9] This created a sense of inferiority and insecurity in Mithrun causing his snobby feelings and disdain for others as well as making him strive to be seen as the "perfect" elf. Mithrun was secretly envious and angry that his supposedly lesser brother was to be heir to their house while Mithrun, the superior elf, was forced to join the Canaries due to his brother's weak constitution. This made him vulnerable to the demon's influence when it showed him a vision of his brother with a woman Mithrun had loved, but was unable to pursue due to joining the Canaries.[10]

Following his experiences as a dungeon lord and being left in a barely alive state after the demon ate his desires as well as take one of his eyes and damage his ears, he appeared to developed a deep sense of shame over his weakness and sense of superiority. He remarks at one point that the demon took his eye and ears, symbols of his supposed superiority, after it looked into his heart and saw what he truly was; an envious, petty, and snobby entitled brat.[9]

Abilities[]

Mithrun primarily wields teleportation magic, which swaps the exact locations of two objects. In order to teleport a target, he must make contact with it,[11] although he can freely teleport himself around.[12] His teleportation comprises of two main attack tactics. The first is teleporting his opponents into another location (e.g. a wall) to immobilize them. Due to the swapping property, this also leaves a piece of whatever was occupying the location in place of the teleported target (e.g. after teleporting someone into a stone wall, a piece of that wall resembling a statue of that person will be left in their place), which has caused his abilities to be mistaken for petrification.[13] He is a skilled and agile martial artist, allowing him to dodge his opponents' attacks and easily land the hit required to teleport them.[14]

His other tactic is teleporting an object into his opponent. Due to the swapping property, this can instantly remove large chunks of his target's flesh, thereby damaging them and restricting their ability to attack.[15] He typically does this with nearby objects or debris. He can rapidly teleport several objects into his opponent at once by dragging his hand along the objects.[16] Due to his poor sense of direction and missing eye, he sometimes misses intended fatal attacks, such as teleporting an object into someone's head.[7]

The range of his teleportation ability can be very far. He teleported the Giant Walking Mushroom in the 1st Floor, swapping it with water from the underground lake in the 4th Floor.[17] He can also use teleportation to slow his momentum while falling, allowing him to survive long drops.[18] Mithrun is able to use healing magic,[19] cast a neutralization poison spell as well as resurrection spells.[20] Due to his experience of being the lord of a dungeon, he has a unique sense of direction when in dungeons.[21]

Mithrun doesn't carry much for equipment outside of his elven armor and cloak. However, he can use his cloak as a weapon to great effectiveness. Due to its large surface area, he can teleport it inbetween a target, effectively bisecting it, and then pulling the cloak back out to split the target.[22] This allows him to easily cut up what would otherwise be extremely durable and difficult to break targets, such as large chunks of ice.[23] He was once issued a staff similar to that of Pattadol's, though he often lost it which led to him no longer carrying it.[24]

Relationships[]

Pattadol[]

"Communications pro"

Pattadol shows great respect for Mithrun, as she is under the impression that he must be an incredibly skilled man. Mithrun however only sees his fellow squad members by their role, and doesn't really pay much attention to them.[25]

Cithis[]

"Illusion caster"

Cithis has been put in the role of Mithrun's caretaker, making sure he eats, sleeps, and does his duties properly since he no longer has any desire to do so himself. Cithis originally used her illusory magic to order Mithrun around and make him do humiliating things, but after she tried to make him hurt Pattadol, he refused (on the grounds that he would have gotten kicked out of the canaries), making Cithis realize that her magic had never had any effect on him, he'd just had no reason to refuse before now. After that realization, Cithis became surprisingly respectful and obedient to him.[26]

Fleki[]

"In charge of recon"

Lycion[]

"Wolfman"

Otta[]

"The one that changes topography"

Milsiril[]

"Doll user" / "Gloomy Milsiril"

Before Mithrun lost his desires, he had tried to befriend Milsiril, but his overtly friendly demeanor overwhelmed and scared her off.[27] After Mithrun became dungeon master, Milsiril realized all the emotional turmoil he had held deep down, and thought that they might have actually gotten along if they had talked a bit more. Milsiril found and saved Mithrun after he was devoured by the demon. She also managed to rouse him from his catatonic state by goading him into eating so that he could eventually re-enter a dungeon to kill demons.[28]

Kabru[]

"I can use him to conquer the dungeon."

Kabru and Mithrun have traveled together in the dungeon for a time. Over the course of their journey together, Mithrun shared his past with Kabru, detailing his experience as a dungeon master. Kabru has often voiced exasperation over all the unnecessary details/tangents/characters in Mithrun's stories [29] and wants to condense Mithrun's backstory into a simpler story that will be easier for him tell to Laios, and make it easier for Laios to understand so that it will serve as a warning to him about demons. [30]

Despite his frustration, he does also shows a fair amount of sympathy for what Mithrun went through. Fleki comments that Kabru is surprisingly good at keeping Mithrun under control, and Lycion comments how his hair became glossier. ( "Your hair looks glossier then usual. Did he feed you properly?" )

Winged Lion[]

"Obsessed"

Obrin[]

Mithrun's older brother is the source of a lot of Mithrun's emotional turmoil, beginning with the fact that, while there were rumors that his brother was a bastard child due to his lack of iconic familial traits and weak constitution, it was actually Mithrun himself who was the bastard child, and yet Mithrun was chosen to serve the Canaries instead of being heir to his house, a fact which he couldn't understand or accept. He also disliked that his brother was often taken with those who were apparently 'far out of his league' and yet he was able to become romantically involved with Sultha, a girl that Mithrun himself liked. This caused a deep sense of insecurity in him that led to resentment and envy. Both of these incidents were major reasons why Mithrun was lured in by the demon and made his wish to become a dungeon master.[31]

According to a conversation he has with Kabru later, Mithrun's brother is still doing fine, and they have an agreement to meet up every five years or so, though his brother has said "You can come and see me whenever you like." suggesting that his brother actually cares for him deeply.[32]

Sultha[]

Trivia[]

  • Because his desires have all been devoured by a demon, he no longer has a 'favorite' or 'least favorite' food.[33]
  • Despite his years of experience in dungeon exploration, he has never once been killed in a dungeon.[33]
  • His right eye was fully destroyed by the demon that ate his desires, the right eye that we see now is a prosthetic one.[33]
  • Mithrun had accidentally killed Misyl's companion by teleporting into them.[36]
  • Because he still has routine habits, he is able to handle everyday life independently. However, he often neglects things such as eating and sleeping when in a dungeon.
