Tentacles (テンタクルス Tentakurusu?) are a type of monster in Delicious in Dungeon.

Anatomy and Appearance

There are multiple species of Tentacles. They vary widely in appearance, being different colors, shapes and sizes, but generally they look like tentacles or anemones.[1] They do not have brains.[2]

Ivy Tentacles (アイビーテンタクルス aibī tentakurusu?) resemble the roots or vines of a plant. They are light brown with no spotting and are typically about five centimeters in diameter and 20 meters in length.[3]

Behavior and Weaknesses

They grow anywhere that there is open space, including inside traps and other mechanisms, and can break some mechanisms in the process.[4]

Their main source of sustenance are any spirits floating around in the air, so they do not really hunt for food.[2] They appear to respond to stimuli by striking out their tentacles and latching onto the source. On contact with the tentacles, venomous stingers shoot out and cause paralysis and horrible welts on the victim's skin. They can also sting through armor.[5] Giant Frogs are resistant to their stings,[6] so one work-around is to use their skin as protective gear to avoid getting injured.[7]

Aiming for the main body appears to be the correct strategy. Pouring vinegar on them can either cause or prevent stingers from firing, depending on the species of Tentacles.[8]

Culinary Usage

If peeled with care, they can be eaten raw somewhat like a banana. They are sticky in texture. (According to Laios, if quartered lengthwise, each quarter has a different flavor, but he is alone in thinking this.) Recipe-wise they would be good simmered, mashed or baked with vegetables[9] and can be treated much like a root vegetable.[10]

They have been used in the following dishes:

Trivia

  • Laios calls them テンタクルス (tentakurusu) but the kanji given is "触手生物" (shokushu seibutsu, lit. living tentacle).[12]
