The Lunatic Magician (狂乱の魔術師 Kyōran no majutsu-shi?)[3] is the mage responsible for the creation of the dungeon on The Island. His actions make him the secondary antagonist of the manga Delicious in Dungeon.
The real identity of the Lunatic Magician is an elf called Thistle (シスル Shisuru?)[4][5] who served as a magician in the court of King Delgal during the Golden Age.[6]
Appearance[]
Thistle has brown skin, purple eyes and platinum blond hair[7] tied in a braid about his head and a straight fringe.[8] As typical of his race, he has pointed ears that face outwards. On some occasions his normally round pupils change to a figure 8 or keyhole shape in one[9] or both eyes.[10]
His attire early in the story consists of a hooded cloak, long-sleeved tunic, and baggy knee-breeches with boots.[11] In chapter 55, he wears a similar outfit with tighter trousers and a floral-patterned tunic over a white doublet.
From chapter 66 onward, he wears one of the jester outfits he wore during Delgal's childhood[12], consisting of pants with jester's boots attached under a purple dress with paned sleeves and red accents, with small red ribbons fastening the top, a larger red bow at the back of his ruffled collar and small gold discs hanging from the pointed ends of his skirt, with his hair tied in a simpler hanging braid.

Personality[]
As his epithet describes, Thistle is considered irrational and not one for reasonable conversation.[13][14] He appears single-minded in his devotion to King Delgal and the Golden Country.[15] This has manifested itself to a delusional and paranoid level, with him convinced he's protecting King Delgal from harm and preserving his homeland, viewing everyone he meets as a threat to the king and seemingly oblivious to Delgal's escape and death or what that escape from his 'protection' would imply. He is shown to be constantly agitated, quick to anger and vicious to any and all perceived threats. He is also shown to be somewhat detached from reality and everyone around him. When he finds Falin he refers to her as The Red Dragon and isn't able to recognize her as human. He also sent her to "find Delgal" as though he had just escaped despite him escaping and perishing 6 years ago.
He has a habit of self-inflicting injuries whenever he is frustrated. He has scratched his head to the point of bleeding and frequently chews at the tip of his thumb.[16][17]
It is later revealed that his insanity and cruelty is due to him being a victim of The Golden Lion; Initially Thistle was shown be rational, sane, and caring. While he was given to Delgal's father, the former king, as a gift he ended up being treated as a second son to the king and viewed the royal family and their kingdom as his own family and home who enthusiastically felt the same towards him. His wish was born from seeing his adoptive brother break down at the thought of him, his family and kingdom dying from numerous invaders and threats and begged him to find a solution. His single minded drive came from the Golden Lion eating all of his other desires until the only thing that remained was the desire to keep Delgal "safe". Flashbacks show that when he first acquired the powers of the Golden Lion his goals were much more sane and healthy in that he wanted to use them for the safety and prosperity of the kingdom to improve the quality of life for the residents. The lion quickly consumed these goals causing him to forget them and leading to his psychotic single minded desire of keeping the kingdom safe under any means necessary.
He is also shown to be rather childish with a juvenile way of thinking, likely due to the fact that while he was oldest resident of the Golden Kingdom having been there from before Delgal's birth to the birth of his grandchildren, as an elf he was likely only an early to middle adolescent developmentally.[18] This caused some issues with his place in the palace even before he became the Lunatic Magician as when residents were young he would seem wise, but as they grew they would mature past him mentally until he would appeare as immature and childish
Delgal himself, who grew up with Thistle as his brother, failed to remember that being an elf made him age slower and viewed him as an equal, expecting his mental age to match his own. This became a problem when he begged Thistle to save the kingdom with his magic not realizing he had essentially tasked a teenager with the weight and responsibility of saving an entire kingdom, something someone so young would not be able to handle.
Abilities[]
As the lord of the dungeon, Thistle has a great amount of power over both the structure of the dungeon and the monsters that inhabit it. His lifespan has also been extended by the dungeon's power.[19] He has altered the structure of the dungeon on multiple occasions, most often causing the dungeon to open a hole in the ground to both get rid of enemies as well as escape himself.[20][21] For monsters he typically calls them to his aid[22] or instructs them to act (for example, tasking the Red Dragon with finding King Delgal).[23] He seems to be fond of using small dragons nicknamed 'the magician's eyes' to sense and alert him to changes in the dungeon.[24]
Much of this power seems to stem from a book in his possession. The book has an intricately designed cover, with an eye on both covers that opens on touch to show a pupil shaped like a figure 8.[25] With this book, he is able to cast ancient magic[26] - for example, forming wyverns named Eyes of the Magician[27] out of blood from the carcass of the Red Dragon to attack the Touden party.[28]
Relationships[]
Freinag[]
He likely viewed Freinag as a father figure. He was once embraced by Freinag and told he was like a son to him.[29]
Delgal[]
He is incredibly loyal to and protective of Delgal, and is willing to destroy anything he perceives as a threat to his throne or kingdom.[15] The elf was present in the king's life since birth and for major events such as his wedding and coronation.[6] According to Yaad, Delgal grew up alongside Thistle and the two were raised as if they were brothers. Delgal was also the person who suggested Thistle take up studying magic.[4] The two would also watch swordsmanship tournaments together.[30] Delgal viewed him as family and loved him like a brother, his love for him was so great that when Thistle went insane and committed atrocities against him, his family and his kingdom he did not feel anger but rather shame and guilt for placing such a burden on Thistle, feeling responsible for pushing him to such a place.
Winged Lion[]
"I can't trust it."
As the leader of the Dungeon, Thistle has his wishes granted by the Lion, although he has sealed the demon in two separate books and thusly the demon is unable to consume his desire for over a thousand years. The Lion has a veneer of wishing only the best for Thistle and those of the Golden Country, however the second the demon was released, it consumed all of Thistle's desires and left him comatose.
Laios Touden[]
Laios' intrusions into the Living Paintings were noticed by the Thistle within them, and when met within the dungeon he recognized and remembered Laios' intrusions. These intrusions seemed to have a detrimental effect on Thistle's already tenuous mental state as he immediately viewed Laios as a personal enemy, with him accusing Laios of being a thief and intruder.
Trivia[]
- Thistle has no 'favourite' or 'least favourite' food.
- Thistle has at least fourteen diaries in which he writes poems in. He kept them hidden under his bed at his house.[31]
- The English translation, done by Yen Press, adapted his name to "Sissel". In the official Japanese manga, as well as the anime adaptation, he is named "Thistle".
- Thistle was also assumed to be female multiple times by Yen Press.[32][33][34] This was later corrected in Chapter 47.[24]
- Also, the official Polish subtitles on Netflix have the name Sissel.
- The anime adaptation changed Thistle's book to be yellow rather than red like in the manga.
